Latin Name: Swietenia macrophylla
Origin: Central America
Character: reaches 130 or so feet, with a very wide trunk of up to 6 feet. The tree has a light sapwood, close to the heart in color. The tree color turns a rich brown with exposure and is a beautiful brownish to dark reddish brown color over time. The timber is cut in plane, riff and quartercut boards. Some trees are called fiddleback, blistered, mottled, variegated, and lustrous. The outer 16 to 18 inches of the trees usually have this characteristic. The wood glues well and is good for turning and carving.
